The death occurred of fourteen year old Aisling Cooke following a road traffic accident in New Jersey, USA. Sympathy is extended to her parents Hugh and Deirdre Cooke, USA; brother Colin; her grandparents Paddy and Lily Cooke, Gortermone, Carrigallen and all the Cooke family. Margaret of New Orleans
On Saturday last, 6 September 2014 a tour group Celtic Tours from the USA, along with their tour operator Danny O’Flaherty visited Margaret of New Orleans cottage, Tully South, Carrigallen. On arrival they were greeted Chairperson Bernadette O’Rourke and welcomed them to Margaret’s cottage. The visitors were fascinated by the cottage and by Margaret’s story and by the breath taking views. The committee had organised a day of events for them, they experienced the making and tasting of boxty expertly demonstrated by Paul and Sinéad Farrelly, Drummully Boxty, Killeshandra, Co Cavan and Neil Foulkes green woodworker spoke about and demonstrated the art. Entertainment was provided by members from the Finnegan family traditional group and accompanied by Veronica Kelly and singing by Fr D Murray. Sean Nós dancing was performed by Veronica Kelly and Margaret Looby. Leitrim County Council CEO, Frank Curran attended and spoke, as did Leitrim County Council Cathaoirleach Paddy O’Rourke and Sinéad McDermott – Leitrim Tourism Officer. In attendance was also PJ Bradley, former MLA politician South Down, and his wife. Following lunch in the Kilbrackan Arms Hotel the entertainment continued with Charlie McGettigan performing his song which he had written about Margaret, followed by Tony Fahy; Finnegan Family; dancing from Vanessa Dolan; songs from Veronica Kelly; Helen Corcoran and Maura Williamson read the poem Margaret’s spirit written by local poet Kevin Patrick; dancing from Barry Taylor and the day’s entertainment ended with Danny O’Flaherty performing his own composed songs. The day’s event was funded by Community Tourism Diaspora Project & Leitrim County Council Tourism. The tour operator was highly impressed by their time spent in Carrigallen and he hopes to bring a much larger group to the area next year.
Congratulations to Conor Hession and Matiss Polis, Carrigallen who will don the Irish National jersey in the European Single Lifts Power lifting Championships in Gorey, Co Wexford from 12 to 14 September 2014. The two sixteen year olds competed in the National Championships in Galway last month, with Conor competing in the 110kg and Matiss in the 75kg category. They both finished second thus securing them their places on the Irish team. The two athletes are members of the Irish Drug Free Powerlifting Association.
Well done to Conor and Matiss on their achievements so far and wishing them every success in their categories in the European Championships.

G.F.C. Lotto The draw was held on Saturday, 6 September 2014 and the numbers drawn on the night were 4, 20, 21, and 31. There was no Jackpot winner and the four winners of €50 each were Mary Farrell, Sue Sheehan, Hugh Reilly and Pauline Harte. Next week’s draw will be held in the Kilbrackan Arms Hotel on 13 September 2014 when the Jackpot will be €1,800. Those in charge on the night will be Ann O’Malley, John McCabe and Michael Donohoe.

Thunder Rolls Garth Brooks Charity Concert featuring a host of very talented Carrigallen artists takes place in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arvagh on Saturday, 13th September in aid of Saint Christopher’s Hospice Cavan. Also performing on the night will be singing sensation Priest Father Ray Kelly who became a worldwide phenomenon reaching over 40 million hits on youtube for singing “HALLELUJAH” at a couples wedding.
