Mary Crocker RIP
There was widespread sadness throughout the parish when the sudden death of Mary Crocker, (nee McNaboe) occurred. Mary was born in Bredagh, Carrigallen and seventy four years ago the McNaboe family moved to Beaghbeg, Carrigallen. Mary at a young age went to England to get employment. She worked in Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children, Surrey as a ward orderly, caring for very sick children. Following her mother’s death she came regularly to maintain the homestead and in the early 80s she and her partner Cyril Fuller decided to make Beaghbeg their home. Mary enjoyed the outdoor life and she and Cyril helped the neighbours with rearing hay, picking potatoes and crops. They also had a very sufficient vegetable plot which kept them in great supply of vegetables along with giving them great satisfaction of growing their own food. Sadly Cyril died many years ago; however Mary continued living in Beaghbeg keeping it as a holiday home for the rest of her brothers and sisters. Mary was a very witty person, had a good sense of humour, and enjoyed her weekends out, meeting people and her social drink. Although she had a television, she rarely watched it, instead she preferred to read and do cryptic crosswords. She was predeceased by her sisters Elizabeth and Sally and brothers Packie Joe, Jimmy, Danny and Jude. Sympathy is extended to her brother Tommy Carrigallen and sisters Cora and Brigid, England. Removal was to St Mary’s Church, Carrigallen, followed by funeral mass celebrated by Fr Denis Murray PP, with interment in the adjoining Cemetery. May she rest in Peace.

The Jimmy McManus Memorial annual Pool Tournament was held over St Patrick’s weekend last in MJs bar. Thirty-two players took part and after a very exciting weekend of pool Eamon Dolan and Raymond McBrien qualified for the final. What a final it was – reminiscent of the 1985 World Snooker Championship final, commonly known as the ‘black ball final’ between Steve Davis and Denis Taylor, with Eamon Dolan winning the match on the final ball of the final frame. Congratulations to Eamon and to all those who took part in the tournament. Bridie McManus and her boys would like to thank Patrick Mitchell for the use of the premises; refreshment which were served; and to all who donated spot prizes – Mart Stores Carrigallen, Pat Masterson, McCann’s Centra, Minnies Bar Killeshandra, Noeleen Grimes, Drumury, and Radisson Blu Hotel Cavan. Thanks to Eileen Donohoe for selling tickets at the final; to Philip McIntyre for videoing and photography; Con Dolan for his dickie bows for the two finalists (Michael Smyth’s was in the wash): and to all who supported this event. Funds raised were €650 which will be forwarded to the Oncology Unit Cavan General Hospital.
