Albert RIP

We join with the rest of the country to pay tribute to former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds who passed away on Thursday morning last. Albert represented this constituency as a TD from 1977 until 2002 and also served as Minister for Telecommunications and Transport, Industry and Energy and Finance prior to being elected Taoiseach. People in this area were very familiar with his presence at funerals and other events of benefit to the area. Besides his many achievements, he will be remembered for setting up C&D Pet Foods in Edgeworthstown in the 1960s and has continued to give valuable employment to people in this area and throughout the county. We extend sympathy to his wife Kathleen and his family.

Remembering First World War

In last week’s edition of the Longford Leader, local Historian Hughie Farrell formerly of The Furze recalled a number of people from this area who fought and many died in that terrible war. One of the few survivors’ was Hughie’s grandfather Private Thomas Farrell who lived for many years in Cluntymullen and Kinard before his death in 1957 and is buried in Foxhall Cemetery. This article is well worth reading.
