Cnoc Mhuire Class of 93 re-union takes place in Fay’s Bar, Granard on Saturday, 12 April at 8pm. All looking forward to meeting up and reminiscing after 21 years!
The Granard Branch of St. Christopher’s is holding their annual Easter Bunny walk on Sunday, 13 April 2014. Walkers will be leaving the Granard Health Centre at 3pm and walking to Abbeylara where there will be eggs galore and entertainment.
The 100K Ross Carr Memorial Cycle takes place on Sunday, 13 April from Longford Slashers GAA Complex. Start time is 10am. Registration 8.30am to 9.30am. €25 entry fee. Register and Pay on the day. County Longford Rural Transport “door to door” services have spaces available for any passengers who wish to travel to their local town or village. To maintain the local service in the area, including “link” services, more service users are required and all age groups are very welcome to travel. Rath Mhuire Resource Centre
Computer/Mobile Phone - Learning Sessions: All our participants really enjoyed these sessions and once again we extend our thanks to all concerned in Cnoc Mhuire particularly all the students who were extremely helpful courteous and it was wonderful to work with them. This has been an excellent intergenerational opportunity and we look forward to working with them again in the future.
Virginia Gospel Choir
We are delighted and really looking forward to welcoming the Virginia Gospel Choir for a performance on Sunday, 25 May at 6pm in St. Mary’s Church. They will be joined by Jackie Callaghan and other All Ireland winning musicians form the World Academy of Irish Music and Dance from the University of Limerick as well as our own excellent St. Mary’s Granard Choir. This should be a wonderful evening and tickets (€10.00) will be on sale in the coming weeks. All proceeds are guaranteed to go to Rath Mhuire and Dolmen Services for our work in the local community with older people at Rath Mhuire Centre and Dolmen Centre. We would greatly appreciate your support.
Moatsiders Active Age
Many thanks to Pauline Rodgers for joining us at our last meeting and giving us an insight to the importance of mindfulness and meditation in our own lives. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 10 April at 2.30pm and Patricia McCormack (Yoga Instructor) will be with us in the afternoon. We will also be making plans for our summer outings and trips.
Men’s Social Club
Our next meeting date is Tuesday 15 April at 12noon in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. We had a great afternoon with our friends in Colmcille and the Dolmen Centre for dinner and an afternoon of music and song in The Haggard in Dromard. Thanks to Michael Masterson for hosting us and all were very impressed with the work he has done in restoring the old cottage and former dancehall, it evoked many memories for everyone!

Plans are in place for the Easter Festival on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April. The festival kicks off on Saturday morning at 11am with a Historical Walk of Granard led by local historian Jimmy Donohoe. Jimmy’s tour is both very enjoyable and informative as he holds a wealth of knowledge about Granard’s history! On Saturday afternoon at 3pm the gruelling 5K Walk/Jog/Run will start at Kiernan Milling! Entry is €10 per adult and €5 for U16 participants. Prizes are as follows Men 1st €100; 2nd €50; 3rd €25. 1st u16. Ladies 1st €100, 2nd €50 3rd €25 1st U16 . Registration will take place from 2pm at Kiernan Milling. All walkers, joggers and elite runners are welcome. For more information call Patrick on 043 6687935. Later in the evening, the Novelty Tug-O-War will take place on Main Street. All businesses in the area are invited to enter a team of 7 people. The cost is €20 per team. On Easter Sunday at 2pm and onwards there will be lots of fabulous entertainment for children and adults including fire eating, stilt walking and unicyclist from Corvenieos Entertainment. There will also be face painting and balloon modelling. The parade is expected to pass through Main Street at 2.30pm. Many floats have entered, but there is still time to join up if you wish to do so call Patrick on 043 6687935. The Madagascar circus will be in Granard after the parade with appearances by Marty the dancing Zebra, Alex the friendly Lion and Melman the hypochondriac Giraffe! Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the fun! With such a variety of free, live entertainment there is something for everyone at the Easter Festival in Granard!
Killeen Dramatic Society
Killeen Dramatic Society Reunion play “The Maiden Aunt” present a three act comedy written by Streete native Jimmy Keary. The cast are putting the finishing touches to rehearsals and a great night’s entertainment is anticipated when the curtain goes up for the opening night on this Thursday, 10 April in the Granard Community Centre followed by a second showing on Friday 11 April with admission adults €10 and children €5.

The Longford Association in Dublin will hold their annual dinner on this Saturday 13 April in the Red Cow Moran Hotel. This is the 60th event and a large crowd is expected for the Diamond Celebrations. The Person of the Year award this year goes to long serving member of the Association Liam Cauldwell a native of Drumlish. The Special Recognition Award goes to Abbeylara native Thomas Gilligan for his successes in the business world and his lifetime involvement with the GAA in his native parish and in Dublin with his adopted club Na Fianna. Music on the night will be by Mick Flavin and his band. The event will be commencing at 8.00pm sharp. Patrons may stay overnight in the hotel at a special price of €89 per couple which includes breakfast. Longford GAA Annual Race Day takes place on Wednesday 30 April at Punchestown on Gold Cup Day. This year’s event is kindly sponsored by Flynn and Lynch Life Pensions Dublin Street Longford and promises to be another successful fundraiser for Longford GAA.
