Boherquill Ramblers

The Ramblers paid their first visit of the year to Mullaghmeen Forest on Sunday March 30th. Mullaghmeen is very different from the other forests which the Ramblers visit; it is the largest planted beech forest in Western Europe and instead of densely-planted pines the slender grey trunks of the beech trees create a much brighter scene, cool and airy with large areas of bluebells in spring and lush ferns during the summer. A lot of brambles and scrub are now being removed, letting in more light and uncovering the mossy forest floor. After starting on the yellow walk the Ramblers left the Forest at Tonyowen for a short stretch of road walk and then returned through Foyran and skirted the highest area of the Forest on the way back to the car park at the end of the walk. Thank you to Ramblers member Joe Masterson for leading the group on the walk which included sections of several of the colour-coded walks through the Forest. The Ramblers will walk in Streete on Sunday April 13th. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at the church in Streete at 1.40pm.
