With polling day in both the local and European elections roughly six weeks away, local interest in the contests which up until now had been to put mildly very low key but is expected to become the main topic of conversation during the coming weeks as canvassing for votes swings into action. For several decades, Ballinagh town and the local townlands were included in what was known as Cavan electoral area but in this years campaign, following on the re-drawing of the county’s electoral boundaries, Ballinagh now becomes included in the Ballyjamesduff area, where six seats are up for grabs on the new council which will see massive changes as in the ‘outgoing’ body there are twenty five seats while the numbers due to be elected in next months poll will see a reduction of seven seats to a figure of eighteen members. As we go to press indications are that in this area, just one candidate who would be regarded as ‘local’ will have his name on the ballot paper on polling day while an interesting statistic is the fact that in the local authority elections held in 1942 two candidates both residents of Ballinagh, Charles C Fitzpatrick, (Fianna Fail) and Thomas Cowan, (Labour) were both candidates in the Cavan electoral area and both were elected with substantial majorities.
