Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday 20th January. Jackpot €5,200-00 – Numbers drawn 3 / 8 / 17 / 25 – No winner. €50 each – John & Miriam Lynch, Main St, Arva. Martin Brennan, Cortober. Enda Boylan, Corfree. The Jackpot on Monday night last 27th January was €5,250-00. Lotto Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection on Monday evenings and everyone is welcome to attend the draw. The club have an option of paying by direct debit for anyone wishing to join the LOTTO and give the club much needed support. Contact any club officer or check out the club website www.arvagfc.com Challenge: The Croagh Patrick Challenge will take place on Saturday 8th February. A bus will leave Arva on that morning stopping for refreshments enroute. Following the climb participants will be brought to the hotel for an evening meal, Bed and Breakfast. This should be a good event for those taking part and anyone who has not yet got a Sponsorship Card can obtain one in the Post Office. The club would request everyone to leave their Sponsorship Cards and money into the Post Office by 31st January at the latest so that numbers can be confirmed with the Hotel. Raffle: The GAA Club will hold a raffle on 16th March with the 1st prize a Trailer load of Stick’s, 2nd Prize - 10 Bags of Coal and 3rd Prize - 30 Bales of Briquettes. Tickets are on sale priced at €2-00 or 3 tickets for €5-00. All support appreciated. Cavan Footballers played Roscommon on Saturday last in the Hastings Cup semi final in Newtowncashel where they proceeded to dominate the game but kicked 16 wides compared to 2 for Roscommon and were defeated by 2 points on a score of 1-6 to 0-7. All efforts will now concentrate on the upcoming Ulster Championship meeting with Derry in Celtic Park on Wednesday 12th March where we wish them every success. The Senior Team were due to play Tyrone in the Dr Mc Kenna Cup Final in Brewster Park on Saturday night last but it had to be postponed due to weather conditions. It has been re-fixed for Wednesday 12th February.
Cavan get their Division 3 League campaign underway on this Saturday evening in Kingspan Breffni Park with a home game against neighbours Fermanagh who have a new manager this year. The very successful Pete Mc Grath who won two All-Irelands with his native Down took over a couple of months ago and is sure to have the visitors in top form. The game is due to start at 7.00 pm and we look forward to another successful season ahead.
Returns to St Patrick’s Hall, Arva on this Sunday night following a 6 month run in neighbouring Carrigallen. The committee look forward to welcoming all their loyal supporters back to Arva and hope to see many new faces over the next 6 months. With over €3,100-00 on offer each night it is one of the best sessions around. Eyes down at 8.30 pm.

Eucharistic Adoration on Monday evenings from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm. Saturday 1st February is the Feast of St Brigid and in many areas the old tradition of making St Brigid’s Crosses is still alive and well. Sunday 2nd February is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and is also Candelmas Day – Candles will be Blessed for use in the Church and Home during weekend Masses. Candles are on sale in local shops and can be labelled and left in the Church beforehand. Monday 3rd February is the Feast of St Blaise and the traditional Blessing of Throats will be held after Mass. St Blaise was a Bishop and Martyr who was killed during a period of persecution of Christians. He was regarded as having cured many ailments of the Throat.
The Breffni Kickers Line Dancers resumed their classes in the Breffni Arms Hotel on Thursday night last and they continue each Thursday with beginners at 8.30 pm followed by the more advanced at 9.30 pm. Come along and enjoy a night of dancing and exercise in a friendly environment.

Arva Agricultural Show Society will hold a Table Quiz on this Friday, 31st January at 8.30pm in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva. Refreshments will be served and all support would be much appreciated. Loads of spot prizes etc.
‘A LOCK OF FIERCE ROARS’ play by Moth Productions takes place on Saturday 22nd February 2014 in the Breffni Arms Hotel Arva with proceeds going to Saint Christopher’s Hospice Cavan. This play was written by John McManus who wrote ‘THE QUARE LAND’ and is a must see and will have you rolling around with laughter. Tickets cost only 10 euro and are available from Breffni Arms Hotel, Lynch’s Shop, Arva, Loughbawn Hotel, Killeshandra, Moore’s Spar, Ballinagh and Village Foodstore in Crossdoney.
