On Sunday last the Streete Bowls Club in association with Westmeath Bowls hosted the Westmeath Singles competition. Over fifty bowlers turned up for this prestigious event in the bowling calendar. After a great afternoon of bowling the following players qualified for the semi-finals- Enda Murphy and Liam Connaughton from Streete, Pat Feery from Tyrrellspass along with Sean Powell from Ardagh. In two brilliant semi-finals Enda overcame Pat and Sean edged out Liam. In the final Sean raced into an early lead and despite a comeback from Enda he could not be caught. Well done Sean and the Ardagh club! Both Enda and Sean play in Division 2 of the Westmeath League. A special word of thanks to Marian Denning and her helpers for looking after the catering at Sunday’s event. On the home front Streete A had a comprehensive win over Tyrrellspass B and Streete B had a hard fought win over Streete D. New members are very welcome.
monthly meeting will take place on Tuesday, 4th February at 8p.m. in Streete Parish Park. All members are invited to attend and new members are very welcome.
Kilbixy lies about two kilometres north of Ballynacargy; this very historic area was once the capital of Meath and the Ramblers chose it for their walk on Sunday January 19th. Their route took them on a loop first through the forest beside Lough Iron and then out onto the road from Ballynacargy to Rathaspic which took them back to their starting point near St. Bigseach’s church. There has been a church on the site since the 5th century with the present building dating from the end of the 1700s. The church has recently been restored and now half of the main body of the structure is in use as a church while the other half is a Community Centre. On one side of the drive up to the church the ivy-covered ruins of an old leper hospital and a huge dead tree felled by the wind could be seen, while in contrast on the other side the spring bulbs were emerging under the trees and some snowdrops were even beginning to flower. The Ramblers will walk in Newcastle Forest near Ballymahon on Sunday February 2nd. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at the bridge in the Forest at 2pm. The Ramblers AGM will be held in Streete Parish Park on Sunday February 9th after a local walk. Anyone who would like to join the Ramblers annual trip to Strangford for the St. Patrick’s weekend is asked to contact Brian Nerney on 086 2596656 immediately in order to ascertain numbers for the trip.
Inny Shamrocks Annual General meeting takes place on this Thursday, 30th January in Rathowen Community Centre at 9p.m. and all interested are welcome to attend.
