Granard Person of the Year 2012: A most enjoyable night took place in Fay’s Bar on Friday night May 3 when Carmel Fay received her reward which was deferred from last June owing to Carmel’s illness. Many glowing tributes were paid to Carmel from last year’s Town Mayor Cllr PJ Reilly, Current Mayor Cllr John Maguire, Cllr Maura Kilbride-Harkin, Cllr Fintan Flood, Cllr Tommy Stokes, Mr Jack Kilgallon Granard Town Manager, Deputy Robert Troy, Cllr Micheal Carrigy and Andrew Gettings Chairman of St Mary’s GAA. Also present were Ms Anne Glancy Secretary of Town Council and many current and former members of Town Council. Also in attendance were Carmel’s family and many friends. Carmel received a unique piece of Bog Oak and a bouquet of flowers. After the presentation a delicious supper was served. We wish Carmel, Paul and family good health and every good wish for the future.

Granard GAA lotto: The most recent draw was held in Lisryan. Numbers drawn were 17, 24, 25 and 27. There was no outright winner. Congratulations to the following €30 winners - Tommy c/o O’Hara’s Bar, Pamela Walsh, Smith New York and Sharon Sheridan, Mostrim. Next week’s jackpot is €5,000.

Granard ICA: The monthly meeting of the guild took place on Thursday evening May 2. New President Doris Looker chaired her first meeting and did a splendid job. She thanked outgoing President Joy Burns and the other officers for their work during last season. Among the items on the agenda were the annual outings; defibrillators and Bealtaine Festival. Supper was served and the guest speaker was Marie a Tupperware representative. The final meeting before the Summer recess will take place on Thursday, June 6 in the Credit Union at 8pm.

Longford Federation ICA: Our sponsored walk (5km approx) for Breast Cancer Research will be on Sunday, May 19 starting at the Market Square Longford at 3 pm. We hope to see as many members and friends as possible out on this day supporting this worthy cause. The Federation is organising a trip to Bloom in the Park. Table Quiz: A table quiz will be held on this Friday, May 10 in Fay’s Bar. All proceeds to Granard Childcare Facility Childcare The Hill Granard. Start time 9pm. Please support your local crèche on this night. A big thank you to Cummins Hardware Granard and Quinn’s Supply Store, Edgeworthstown for donating shelving for the facility. This gesture is much appreciated.

Longford FeadH: The annual Co Longford Feadh Ceoil takes place in Ballinalee on Saturday and Sunday, May 11 & 12. For information contact Martin Murphy 086 8119444.

Country Markets: Granard Country Markets are delighted to announce that they have Slimming World Meals available as well as their usual supplies of Breads; Cakes; Jams; Crafts and Firewood. The Market is open every Friday morning from 8.30am to 11am in the Market House Granard.

Granard Tidy Tows: The group are organising a Spring Clean on All approach roads to the town on Saturday, May 18 at 10am. We would ask all who are able to help by picking the litter on their own roads. Bags, gloves and pickers will be provided at assembly point: The Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard. This will only work if you all come out and help.

LibrarY: Bealtaine Festival is here for the month of May for Age and Opportunity. Free library membership to all senior citizens throughout May. World Youth Day 2013: Takes place in Rio de Janeiro from Friday, July 26 to Tuesday, July 30. Because of distance and cost to go to Rio de Janeiro an alternative is now available. A link up with the World Youth Day event takes place in Faversham in Kent. It is called Brightlights 2013 and will be held in the beautiful grounds of Aylesford Priory, home to the very welcoming Carmelite Community. With large screen link up with World Youth Day in Rio, live bands catechesis, guest speakers and more this carnival atmosphere will be the next best thing to being in Rio this Summer. It is a great opportunity for young people to experience youth ministry at such an amazing event. It is offered for young people 17-30 years. The cost is €600 approximately. More details in the coming weeks.

Phones4Life.ie: Don’t dump it - Donate it. A box is available at Granard Area Action Group Information Office Main Street Granard to collect old mobile phones with a view to getting a Defibrillator for the Community.

Cycle to Croagh PatricK: The 3rd Annual Cycle and Climb to Croagh Patrick for the Parish of Granard Lourdes Invalid Fund will take place on Saturday, June 1. Last year was a very successful and enjoyable day as over 40 cyclists completed the event while many more people participated in the climb. We hope this year will be equally successful, and there is plenty of time for any aspiring cyclists to fit in the training.

CelebrationS: A celebration concert will take place in the Park House Hotel Edgeworthstown on next Monday, May 13 with a host of Ireland’s top entertainers including Mike Denver; Robert Mizzell; Philomena Begley; Aidan Quinn; TR Dallas; Chuck and June; Carmel McLoughlin; Derek Davis and many more. Compere on the night is Eugene Murphy from Shannonside Radio. This event will celebrate the 27th anniversary of the Park House. Admission €15. Proceeds to Cancer Research.

Granard Men’s Social Club: The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 14 at 12.30pm in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. Since its establishment in 2009 our club always provides members with a forum to avail of a range of relevant informational and educational topics and projects as well as the opportunity to engage in many community and social activities with the added bonus of good company and good food. Sympathy: Sympathy is extended to Fr PJ Fitzpatrick PP Loch Gowna/Mullinalaaghta on the death of his brother Liam Fitzpatrick, Shannonbridge, Offaly recently. May he rest in peace. The death of Anna McGovern (nee Cunningham) Carragh Granard occurred peacefully at her residence on Thursday, May 2 following an illness bravely borne. Her body reposed at her family home on Friday and Saturday. Removal took place to St Mary’s Church Carragh on Sunday for Funeral Mass at 1pm followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. Sympathy is extended to her loving husband Hugh, sons Johnny and Hubie daughters Peig Feeney and Josie Matthews grandchildren sister Maggie brother Bernard sons-in law Fergus and Martin daughter in law Lexie and extended family circle amny friends and neighbours. May her gentle soul rest in peace. The death of Ita Burns Ballinagall Granard occurred at Mullingar General hospital on May 1. Removal took place from Connell’s Funeral Home Longford on Tuesday to St Mary’s Church Granard for funeral Mass at 12 noon followed by burial in Granardkille Cemetery. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to her relatives and friends.

Bealtaine Festival: Workshop entitled ‘A Look Back at the Good Old Days’ with Mary Henry takes place in Lus na Gréine and Granard Library on Fridays, May 10 & 17 from 11am – 12.30pm. All welcome. There is a ‘Pamper Yourself’ Workshop on Tuesday, May 14 with Pat Dunne.
