Longford primary school students made their way to Slashers on Thursday, June 20, to participate in the third annual Garda Sports Day.

The Senior classes in all primary schools in the Longford District are invited to take part in the sports day, which was an initiative set up by the Community Policing Unit. The children take part in a range of activities, explains Ursula Hussey, Community Policing Officer, from obstacle courses to water events, and at the end of the day, the best school is awarded, not based on points but on participation. “It’s good for us to have this positive link with the schools” Ursula explains. “It went well and we look forward to continuing similar events in years to come.”

This year’s event was the most successful to date, with more than 600 children taking part, and Ursula adds that there was great feedback from the teachers and schools.

Ursula wishes to thanks all the volunteers who helped on the day, particularly the Longford Youth Service. Thanks also go to those who sponsored the event; Bank of Ireland, particularly Benny O’Brien, and the Longford Sports Partnership Board of Longford County Council.
