This year has a rather unique date in December, the 12/12/12 , we are planning to mark this day with some special activity regarding the people, work and the place of Granard, more details in the coming weeks. Moatsiders Active Age Club: Next meeting will be held on this Thursday 11October in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre at 2.30pm and we will be doing some yoga. Last week a number of the group joined the residents in Laurel Lodge to celebrate Positive Ageing Week, for an afternoon of games, chat and good fun and it was a great experience, enjoyed by all. Our club is a very active throughout the year and is a great place to meet and socialise, new members are always made very welcome. Contact Jackie at 043-6686309.

Men’s Social Club: Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday October 9th at 12 noon in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. Our club provides members with a forum for socialising, acquiring information, and a range of interesting activities. St. Christopher’s: A fundraiser in aid of St Christopher’s and Longford Centre of Independent Living at Bawn Holistic Centre Mullinalaghta on Sunday 14 October commencing at 10.30am to 5pm. Historical Society: The AGM of Co. Longford Historical Society will take place in the Longford Arms Hotel on Thursday 18 October at 8.00pm. This is an earlier date than usual and members are encouraged to attend. Proceedings will not be prolonged and refreshment will be served.

G.A.A.: Congratulations to neighbours Mullahoran captained by Dermot Sheridan who defeated Kingscourt in the Cavan Senior Co. Final on Sunday last at Kingspan Breffni Park Dermot is a cousin of Brian Sheridan the captain of St. Mary’s Granard who won the Co. Longford Intermediate final last week. Well done to all concerned.

Northern Gaels: Congratulations to the young footballers of Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta on winning the u.16 Championship and the u.16 Special League recently. Well done to all the panel of players and management and mentors.

Defibrillators: A group has been formed to raise funds to secure defibrillators for the Granard Area. Currently the group are collecting unwanted/used mobile phones. There are collection boxes in various places around town including Granard Area Action Group Office Main Street. Please bring along your old phones and deposit it in these boxes.

Concert Tour: Comhaltas Concert takes place at the Backstage Theatre Longford on Monday 15 October commencing at 8.00pm. Tickets are €10.00 each and are available from Kate McKenna at 086-8350148. Congratulations to Elaine Reilly Ballymore Granard daughter of Hughie and Helen who is among the musicians on the concert tour of Ireland from 14 to 27 October.

Citizens Information: An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Centre will be in attendance at the Granard Area Action Group Information Office Main Street Granard each Thursday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. This service is free and confidential. Library News: Granard Branch Library Book Club is on Wednesday 24 October at 11.00am. New members always welcome.

15Km Challenge: The Gallant 15km Challenge in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice takes place Saturday 27 October. Main sponsor is MacManus Pharmacy. People can either walk, run or cycle the 15km from Cavan to Cornafean or choose the smaller course of Ballinagh to Cavan. Sponsorship cards are available from St Christopher’s Hospice, any of the MacManus Pharmacies, Ciaran Weir, Padraig Cosgrove, Willie Hughes, or Crossdoney Foodstore. 

AG Bingo: Bingo continues each Wednesday night at the Community Centre Granard commencing at 8.45pm. Proceeds to St. Mary’s GFC and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is appreciated.

Wedding: Congratulations Ann Marie Reilly formerly of Carragh Granard and Ben Hopkins Tallaght Dublin who were married in St. Bernard’s Church Abbeylara on Friday 28 September. A reception for family and friends followed in Hotel Kilmore Cavan. We wish them well for the future in their home in Kilbride Abbeylara. Ann Marie is a popular member of staff at Granard Community Childcare Facility The Hill Granard.

Recent Birth: Congratulations to Mary Flynn formerly of Ballyboy Abbeylara and Keith Tighe Rathowen on the birth of their second daughter recently. Congratulations also to proud grandparents Johnny and Aine Flynn Ballyboy.

Social Dancing Class: Classes continue in the Town Hall Market St. Granard on Thursday evenings Waltz Jive Quick Step etc. No partner needed. 8pm to 10.00pm €12 at the door or €60 for 6 nights classes.
