COMMUNITY TEXT ALERTS: The newly formed Community Alert committee have been hard at work setting up the text alert programme, so if you would like to join and receive Garda Text Alerts, please collect a application form from Rathowen Post Office and drop it back to Angela or Lorraine in the Post Office along with €20 (cover cost of insurance, affiliation to Muire na Tire and texts) for the year. Even though the Text Alerts are up and running now for all who have sent in their form and money you can still join at anytime. There have been no takers of the Text Alert programme in Ballygarron, Ballydorey, Derrydoon, Winetown, Ballygarvey or Killenaugh, Rockfield, Crumlin, Corry, Louglinstown areas. The Garda recommend that there is at least one to two text alert recipients in every town land. If you live in any of these areas, and wish to join, just call to the Post Office for a form. This is a very effective system, just last week thanks to text alerts, the Garda were altered to a stolen car parked in the village. Any queries please contact a committee member, Avril Whitney, Willie Rabbitte, Martina Reilly, Lisa Fulham and Lorraine Tormey.

THE GATHERING FOR RATHOWEN: The Rathowen Gathering 2013 kick-off meeting was held on Monday night last, Peter Duffy chaired the meeting and he had several ideas for the community of Rathowen to organise a gathering. The Gathering is part of the country’s initiative to enable Irish people overseas connect with their roots and their hometown or parish. It was decided in principle to hold a Rathowen Gathering this year, subject to getting local support and an attractive programme being developed. The tentative date was set for a weekend in mid to late September. Numerous events were suggested including reunions for St Thomas’s NS, Rathaspic NS and Rathowen NS, also an exhibition depicting Rathowen parish 100 years ago, Rathowen today and Rathowen in 100 years time – the latter could be linked to a children’s art exhibition depicting their views of how they envisage Rathowen in 2113. The Gathering may also include a reading of one of Mr Jimmy Keary’s plays by visitors from abroad – Jimmy is Rathowen’s widely acclaimed playwright. It was also decided that should a final decision be made on proceeding with a Gathering then social media will be used extensively in contacting Rathowen’s Diasporas. This will include website, email, facebook, twitter, skype and youtube. A final decision on proceeding will be made at the next meeting on Monday night May 1st at 8pm and we would like to appeal for wide support from across the parish community - both young and old, you will not be roped into a committee, the Gathering needs public support for this to be achieved. The Rathowen Gathering 2013 has scope to be a great weekend for the whole parish.
