Longford County Council were yesterday (Tuesday) expected to run the rule over plans to extend Abbeyshrule Airfield.

Should the application be given the green light, it would then allow designers behind the project to extend the existing airfield by a further 300 metres thereby opening up the possibility of catering for 32 seater passenger aircraft.

As well as extending the runway, permission is also sought to widen the runway by five metres, from its present 18 metre width to a more expansive 23 metres.

And in a bid to accommodate for a larger convoy of passengers, the proposed introduction of a taxi area to run parallel to the runway is likewise included in the plans.
