St Patrick’s Arva GAA Club: Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday night 26th November. The Jackpot was €2,200-00 – Numbers drawn were 12 / 17 / 28 / 29. Calendar: The hugely successful 2013 Calendar “Off The Ball” by St Patricks GAA Arva in association with SOSAD is available in many businesses around the area. If you haven’t already got one - they are selling fast and receiving great reviews. The quality of the photography is first class and those taking part are popular members of the local football clubs and are involved in some “Striking Poses” ?? as you’ve never seen them before. Buy the Calendar and support Arva football club and a very worthy cause. SOSAD (Save Our Sons And Daughters) is a Suicide Awareness and Prevention organisation.
Ladies Football: Training for all age groups takes place each Saturday at 11.00 am sharp. The Club welcomes all girls interested in playing football but especially those born in 1997 and 1998 as well as girls born 2003 to 2005.
Scór Sínsear: There was a Senior Scór meeting in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex on Wednesday week last and the club hope to have at least 7 different entries in the competition next February. Anybody interested in singing, dancing, playing an instrument or sketch acting should contact Niall Gormley on 086-8986827.
Social Club: The monthly Coffee / Tea morning will take place on this Friday – 7th December – in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex following the 10am Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva and the committee would like to see all their members in attendance. New members always welcome.
Christmas Lights: The Folk Group will be singing on the Market Square, Arva from approximately 3.40pm on this Saturday 8th December as they await the arrival of Santa Clause who is making his annual visit to coincide with the Switch on of the Christmas Lights in the town and the Christmas Tree at 4pm. The Christmas Tree is donated annually by Brady’s Garage, Arva for which the community is very grateful. The Folk Group will welcome anyone from the community who wish to join in with them and especially the local children. Santa will then proceed around the town to St Patrick’s Hall by Pony and Trap courtesy of Sam Noble. In St Patrick’s Hall Santa will hand out gifts to all the boys and girls. A Draw will take place for 2 large Hampers, Bottle of Brandy and Fruit Hamper. A warm welcome is extended to all members of the community and surrounding areas. The theme for Christmas in Arva is “DO SHOP LOCAL”.
Dinner: The Community Christmas Dinner will take place in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex on Wednesday of next week 12th December (12 / 12 / ‘12.) Unfortunately this year there will be a small admission fee of €5-00 to help with costs. The committee would like everyone seated at 7.30 pm as the meal will be served at 7.45 pm. Mike Beasley will provide music following the meal and Santa and his helper will be in attendance. So come along and enjoy a good night’s entertainment and craic.
Death: The area was saddened with news of the death of Mrs Ann (Maureen) Jackson, Swellan, Cavan which occurred recently at her residence. A member of the very popular Mc Cabe family, Corlisbratten, Arva she has been living in Cavan since her youth when she went to work in the town. It was there she met and married Jimmy Jackson and together they raised a big family who in turn gave Ann great care during her final illness. Her remains were removed from her residence to the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Felim, Cavan and following Concelebrated Requiem Mass burial took place in Cullies Cemetery. Rev Ultan McGoohan a grand nephew was the Chief celebrant. Maureen is survived by her husband Jimmy, sons, daughters, nephews, nieces (including the Mc Cabe and Shanaghy families, Arva) to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy.
Congrats: Congratulations are extended to Danny and Deirdre Smith, Farrangarve, Arva on the birth of their first baby – a boy – which occurred recently in Cavan General Hospital.
Birthday: Mary Cullen celebrated a significant birthday on Saturday last in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex with a ‘50s / ‘60’s Theme. A great night’s entertainment was had by the very large attendance and in lieu of presents Mary asked for donations for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. Mike Beasley provided live music which was followed by a Peter Masterson Disco while food was provided by the Hotel. The Breffni Kickers Line Dancers gave an exhibition and joined in the general dancing. Thomas Hughes (Mary’s nephew) sang a number of Solo Songs to great applause and he is someone to watch in the future.

The Breffni 20K Challenge: Handed over three cheques on Friday night last to St Luke’s Hospital for Cancer Cure, Care and Control, Dublin, the NBCRI (National Breast Cancer Research Institute) Galway, and Cavan Cancer Homecare in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex. There was a good attendance on the night and as usual Eamonn and Philomena provided refreshments. Deirdre Hughes spoke on behalf of St Luke’s, Brían Ellis spoke on behalf of NBCRI, and Jimmy O’Donnell spoke on behalf of Cavan Cancer Homecare. On behalf of the sponsors/organisers Niall Brady, Michael Ellis and Philip Brady also spoke and a good night’s craic followed with the formalities over. Despite the downturn the Breffni Challenge was still the biggest contributor to St Luke’s this year and is a tribute to the people of Arva and the surrounding areas who give so much support. The amounts for the Breffni Challenge were St Lukes €58,200, NBCRI €5,000, Cavan/Monaghan Hospice Homecare €5,000
