On this Sunday 20 March a Fancy Dress Charity Ride and Donkey Derby will take in aid of Granard Community Childcare Facility. The hunt is leaving Granard Farmers Mart at 1.00pm followed by Donkey Derby at McElvaney’s Pub Coolarty. Refreshments will be served. All those in Fancy Dress will be automatically entered into a free draw. There is also a prize for the best dressed adult and the best dressed child. Come along and join in the fun.


Despite the inclement weather on Sunday afternoon a good crowd took part in the Sponsored Walk in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation Stroke Unit. Thanks to the Boherquill Ramblers who joined in for their weekly walk. The organisers wish to thank everyone who took part, sponsored or helped out in any way. Further details next week.

St. Mary’s GAA are organising a novel fundraising event in the near future -Strictly Come Dancing. When 24 Dancers are selected 12 female and 12 male they will receive training from a professional dance teacher over a 6 week period and the final will be held at a later date. A launch night will be held on the 9 April when the dancers will be announced and introduced to find out who their dance partner will be. More details on St. Mary’s G.A.A. Website.


The launch of the annual Longford GAA Race Day took place on Friday night last in the Longford Arms Hotel. This year the event takes place on Wednesday 4 May and as usual promises to be a great day’s entertainment as well as raising much needed funds for Longford GAA. The cost of the tickets this year are €100.


Congratulation to the U-16A team and their coach Mr Carroll who won the Leinster Championship last week by defeating Asbourne Community School. We wish them every success in the future.

Congratulations also to their Junior GAA team who qualified for the All Ireland final of the Vocational Schools Junior competition by defeating St. Joseph’s of Castleisland Co. Kerry on Saturday last. We wish the team and their mentors every success in the final.

A Farm Accounts and Taxation Course will be held in the Old Schoolhouse Ballymahon Road, Edgeworthstown in the coming weeks. The Course is aimed at helping farmers prepare computerised farm records and an understanding of Basic Farm Taxation. The main objective of the course is to help farmers plan their business and tax more efficiently. The annual Novena of Hope commences in The Graan Enniskillen on Saturday 19 March at 6.30pm. Granard Writers Group and Granard Book club celebrated World Book Day recently in Granard Branch Library with a selection of favourite readings and stories. It was very enjoyable morning and it was acknowledged by all present that it is wonderful to have two such clubs in the Granard community. Thanks to the Longford and Granard Library Services and all who participated. The aim of the Writers Group is to promote creative writing in an enjoyable and relaxed setting. A Collection of used clothing will take place at the car park beside Granard Community Centre on Thursday 17 March. Please leave as many bags as you can at the collection point before 12 noon. This collection is to help provide vital funding for an orphanage in Ikumbi a small village just outside Nairobi in Kenya. The Dochus Nasamu Orphanage cares for homeless children providing them with education meals clothes medication and accommodation. All enquiries to 087-6890995.

A child Safety Awareness Programme is in the planning by Primary Health Care Team. Open coffee session from 11a.m to 12.30 p.m. at the Centre on Wednesday 6 April to which interested parents are invited to come along to have input into the design of the programme. The course itself will be delivered after Easter at a time convenient to the majority of parents in the Family Resource Centre. The Health Nurse and Health Workers will attend.
