This morning's 05.40 service from Longford to Dublin was delayed for over 40 minutes near Leixlip after vandals caused damage to the train.

Services on the Dublin-Sligo railway line were disrupted this morning after vandals caused damage to an early morning commuter train.

The 05.40 service from Longford to Dublin was stopped just outside Leixlip when three individuals travelling on the train smashed windows and pulled the emergency cord.

They then prevented the driver from resuming the journey by pulling the handle again.

When they were alerted that the Gardaí had been called, two of the vandals escaped along the railway line but were apprehended. It is understood they were under the influence of drugs at the time.

“The line re-opened just before 8am,” an Iarnród Éireann spokesperson said.

The incident comes just days after schedules on the Dublin-Sligo line returned to normal following two weeks of partial closures, bus transfers and cancellations due to flooding.
