Following a review of Raised Bog National Heritage Areas (NHAs), the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, has decided to re-designate three bogs in Co Longford, which will allow turf-cutting to recommence.

The decision, which applies to the bogs at Cloonageeher, Forthill and Rinn River, is subject to approval at EU level.

“I know that this news will be welcomed by those who use the bogs,” Fine Gael TD for Longford-Westmeath, James Bannon said. “Minister Deenihan is putting in place a long-term strategy to consolidate the progress that we have made and ensure the preservation and restoration of our most valuable bog habitats, which make up a small perentage of our peatlands.”
