Smith’s Gala, Newtownforbes had a treat in store for their loyal customers on April 16, as the shop hosted a bake sale for ‘The Great Irish Bake for Temple Street’.
From 9am to 1pm, customers were greeted by the sight of a colourful table laden with freshly baked goods. Products from the shop’s baker’s corner were used for the event, (such as scones and brown soda bread), while staff members Tricia Oates, Jayne Henry, Christine McVeigh and Diane Bohan also contributed some mouthwatering morsels, including coconut buns, banana bread, queen cakes, and Mars Rice Krispie Squares.
Customers Jimmy and Liz Oates and Áine Carberry provided delicious jam buns, apple tarts, queen cakes and chocolate birds’ nests.
It was an extremely busy morning for all at the shop, but thankfully, Shauna Smith (aged 11) and Amy Madden-Oates (aged 9) proved to be fantastic helpers on the day, taking time out of their Easter holidays to lend a hand. The girls took to the job well, and after warmly greeting all their customers, they took in all donations made throughout the day.
The girls even contributed to the cake stand, with lemon cake, chocolates and bracelets made by Shauna, while Amy provided easter buns.
Approximately 100 customers attended on the morning of the sale, all very impressed with the baked goods. Some even stayed on for a free cup of tea and a chat.
In the end, an impressive €550 was raised by the group, much to the delight of all involved.
Speaking to the Leader, Niall Smith of Smith’s Gala explained, “It created a nice buzz in the shop and we were delighted with the amount we raised as we had never done anything like this before!”
“We’re looking forward to doing it again next year!”
