Granard is fast becoming an election minefield ahead of May’s local elections following confirmation that yet another candidate has entered the shake up, writes Liam Cosgrove.

Town Cllr Tommy Stokes this week announced his intention to run as the race for Election 2014 hots up.

The Independent representative, who resigned as a Labour councillor in 2011, is adamant the north Longford town can return an Independent candidate in four months time.

“There is a vote there, I have no doubt about it,” he said, when asked about the district’s non party following.

A member of Granard Town Council for well over a decade, Cllr Stokes is pinning his election hopes on attracting more jobs and enterprise to the region.

“That’s what I will be looking to do. I am in business and have been for many years and knows what’s required to bring inward investment to the likes of Granard,” he said.

Cllr Stokes’ decision to enter the race brings to 12 the number of candidates seeking election in Granard later this year.
