Local people fear there will be a fatal accident on a

dangerous bend of road on the outskirts of Drumlish.

After three accidents on that stretch of road since the turn of the year, there are now fears that someone will lose their life on the stretch, which lies between Longford and Drumlish.

“People are very afraid about the number of accidents that have been recorded here,” said Cllr Martin Mulleady this week.

The Fianna Fail representative said that over the past 12 months, around a dozen accidents had occured involvoing drivers going off the road.

It has, according to Cllr Mulleady left many residents in the area anxious about what might arise unless remedial action is taken.

“There’s no question about it, the bend is a blackspot and someone will be killed unless something is done,” he remarked.

Cllr Mulleady equally had sympathy for a local landowner who he said has been left out of pocket by having to regularly erect new fencing when a crash or incident occurs.

“He is constantly having to do that and it’s not fair. I’d say the people down there are worried that at the end of every weekend they might find a car in their field or in the ditch,” he said.

Cllr Mulleady said the onus now fell on the council to intervene by bringing in a low cost safety scheme to warn motorists of the dangers.

“It needs to be done as soon as possible,” he said.

Cllr Mulleady added an application had been made to the council, the outcome of which was awaited.
