A Standards in Public Office inquiry (SIPO) into how over €250,000 of taxpayers’ money was approved for the purchase of Longford County Council CEO’s Tim Caffrey’s house, is still at a preliminary stage.

The matter was referred to SIPO last November when it emerged voluntary housing body, the Muiriosa Foundation had been granted state funding to secure the house in Clondra.

More than nine months on, the review is still only at a “preliminary inquiry stage”.

The Leader has learned that the independent body, in accordance with the Standards in Public Office Act (2001) appointed an inquiry officer who is presently collating all relevant information in connection to the case, before presenting it to the commission. Only then will a decision be made to determine whether a full investigation is necessary.
