John Reilly and Barbara Smyth were chosen to represent Sinn Fin in the 2014 Local Election

Following a meeting held at the EDI Centre in Longford town on Monday night, the local cumann of Sinn Féin has selected two candidates to contest the 2014 Local Election.

John Reilly will run in the Granard electoral area, while Barbara Smyth will contest for a seat in the Longford area.

“I really believe the people of north Longford deserve to have a choice, and up until now they haven’t had a choice,” Mr Reilly told the Leader following his nomination. “Granard is a town that’s dying on its feet. Six shops have closed in the town this year, and heads will have to be got together after the election to see what can be done. I also intend to do all I can to keep small schools and post offices open.”

Barbara Smyth explained that the rates issue will be among her priorities if her election bid is successful.

“I’m a mother, a housewife and the owner of a small business,” she explained. “There is no thinking outside the box when it comes to rates and it needs to be looked at because local businesses are closing every week. We also have a local housing crisis with all the unfinished estates.

“I joined Sinn Féin earlier this year to try and make a difference and to try and make things better for the people of Longford.”
