Polls conducted by the Irish Independent and Sunday Independent newspapers in recent days indicate Sinn Féin is poised to become the “new kingpin of Irish politics”.

The research predicts Sinn Féin’s European Parliament candidate Matt Carthy will top the poll in the Midlands-North-West constituency.

“The feeling on the doorsteps is optimistic, without a doubt,” said Edel Kelly, the party’s candidate for the South Longford LEA in this month’s local elections. “He’s an experienced, hard-working candidate.”

Also projected to secure seats in the poll are Thomas Byrne (FF), Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan (Ind), and Marian Harkin (Ind).

Asked for her view on Sinn Féin’s performance in the polls, Ms Kelly claimed that, “People are tired of austerity and they see Sinn Féin as the alternative.”
