The Government is to provide €164,000 to restore eight vacant local authority-owned houses in County Longford, the Minister for Housing announced today.

Welcoming the move, Labour TD for Longford-Westmeath, Willie Penrose, said, “Converting these empty unused local authority houses will provide badly-needed homes for families and improve the attractiveness of the residential area.

“Vacant units are magnets for anti-social behaviour, and can make an area appear run-down. The works approved today will help turn these houses into liveable units, which then can be allocated to families who are on the housing list.

Deputy Penrose also urged Longford County Council to employee local contractors to complete the renovation work.

“The project also offers the prospect of work for local builders and other contractors,” he continued. “I would urge the local authority to avail where possible of the services of community organisations that employ and train long-term unemployed people.

“It is now over to the County Council to get the ball rolling and ensure work on these housing units is completed as speedily as possible,” he concluded.
