Labour TD for Longford-Westmeath, Willie Penrose, has welcome the Government’s announcement that high-quality broadband is to be rolled out in 17 rural communities in County Longford.

“This is great news for homes, schools, businesses and community facilities in Longford and it heralds a new era of faster telecommunications for rural Ireland,” Deputy Penrose said.

“Once there are fibre connections in these particular neighbourhoods, it opens up a range of opportunities for people in the surrounding areas to also access better broadband.”

The communities are to be served by a new fibre-based connection announced by the Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte, today, and will be among 1,100 villages nationwide which are set to be connected to the new high-speed network.
