A woman in her 70s has died following a road traffic accident outside Strokestown on Monday afternoon.
Gardaí are investigating the collision that occurred in the townland of Cloonfree and involved four cars and a truck.
The deceased woman’s male passenger - also in his 70s - was removed to UCHG with minor injuries, while the male driver of the truck who is believed to be in his early 40s, was taken to Sligo Hospital with minor injuries.
The male driver (mid 30s) of the third car and his female passenger were removed to the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar with what are believed to be minor injuries. The occupants of the third car - a female driver aged 70 and her female passenger aged 65 - were not injured, while the female driver of the fifth car, and her three passengers were not injured either.
The road in the area was closed to facilitate the Garda forensic collision investigators and has now reopened.
