Longford County Mayor elect, Cllr Mark Casey has given his thumbs up to the reported reduction in payments to local representatives, writes Liam Cosgrove.

Last year, Co Longford’s mayoral salary stood at €36,000 while the deputy mayor’s allowance was capped at €9,000.

Ahead of the formation of a much changed Longford County Council this Friday, it’s believed the mayor’s allowance will be reduced to €20,000 and the deputy mayor’s to €4,000.

Cllr Casey, who as revealed by the Leader last week will take up the role of mayor, said the reductions were long overdue.

“I welcome it, especially in light of the ongoing austerity that many people across this county are still facing,” he said.

Cllr Casey added there was a case to be made for all mayoral allowances, whatever the size of a particular county, to be capped at €20,000.

He agreed with plans to publish councillors’ payments online quarterly .

“People really need to see they are getting value for money,” he said.

“Long gone is the day when people can get elected and just sit on their hands.”
