A 23-year-old man was yesterday (Tuesday) expected to appear in court charged in connection with the discovery of over €100,000 worth of cannabis at the weekend.

Liam Kelly, with an address at 42 Cloverwell, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford was brought before a special sitting of Longford District Court on Saturday evening.

The hearing, which lasted only a matter of minutes, followed the seizure of €120,000 of cannabis herb from a house in the Legan area 24 hours beforehand.

Mr Kelly was charged under Section 3 and Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 at 22 Foxhall Crescent, Legan, Longford and was remanded in custody to appear back at Longford District Court on Tuesday.

As revealed by the Leader on its website, longfordleader.ie on Friday evening, the Legan find is the second such haul of cannabis detected by gardai over the past two weeks.

Officers, backed up by officials from Revenue’s Customs Service discovered cannabis herb with a street value of €120,000 following a raid earlier today (Friday).

The house, which lies in the Legan area, was targeted by search teams shortly before 11am.

A man was arrested at the scene before being brought to Longford Garda station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

The emergence of the Legan seizure comes just days after gardai retrieved around 114 cannabis plants from a growhouse in Ballinamuck.

That seizure was estimated at €91,000, bringing the total haul of cannabis seized in Longford since the turn of the year to over €200,000
