Kerry Houlihan, originally from Moydow, has taken part in the HeadsUp Five Peak challenge for the second time, climbing the highest summits in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales in just 3 days.

The challenge, which took place from May 2-4, set out to raise money for HeadsUp, Rehab’s youth suicide prevention project. Kerry works for HeadsUp and was involved in the initial set-up four years ago. She took then to see if it was viable and to check the route.

Speaking about the event, Kerry said, “We were a small group the first year and it has grown each year. This year we had a smaller number but we are running two events, another one in August, with a smaller group in each event so we can move faster.”

A daughter of Brendan and Regina Houlihan, Kerry was joined by a team of 14 others who were taking part in the challenge for the first time.

“I’m delighted to have completed the challenge for the second time,” she added. “I can’t say it gets any easier as there are different elements that have challenged us each year, such as the wind and the rain, but every group is different.

“On the May trek I met some incredible people and although the challenge is both physically and emotionally demanding, we managed to have a laugh along the way, too. Working with HeadsUp, I know exactly where the money raised goes and I see the benefits that the services HeadsUp provides are making to young people across Ireland.”

All participants must raise €1,875, which covers the cost of €875 for travel, accommodation, food, and mountain guides, and €1,000 goes directly to HeadsUp.

If anyone wants to take part in the challenge over the August Bank Holiday weekend, don’t hesitate to call Kerry on 01 2100521 or email kerry.houlihan@headsup.ie.
