Midlands Simon Community were blown away by all who popped in to the drop-off donation point in 8 Grafton Court, beside Longford Shopping Centre, on June 6 and 7.

People came out in droves to support the service by donating unwanted, high quality goods which will be sold at their charity shops in the Midlands.

Homelessness is a real issue in County Longford, with people sleeping rough in derelict buildings, barns and cars, increasing the demand for the assistance provided by the Simon Community.

Midlands Simon Community provide a variety of services in the area, a Community Liaison Nurse for Homelessness, a Regional Settlement Service and shared Emergency Accommodation Service which is based in Athlone.

The Community Liaison Nurse, who holds a clinic in Longford Health Centre every Monday, worked with 51 cases in Longford in 2013 and has seen a notable increase in the numbers of people presenting in need of help in 2014.

The Regional Settlement Service worked with 20 cases in 2013 rising to 19 cases so far in 2014, thirteen of these women and seven new cases in the month of May alone.

The charity also has a 12 bed regional emergency accommodation service with 6 beds in Athlone and 6 beds in Tullamore which is used by people in need in Longford.

“Homelessness, unfortunately, is on the increase, and I’m hearing it every day from staff and volunteers,” stated Tony O’Riordan, CEO of Midlands Simon Community, “the demand for our services is on the up.”

Midlands Simon Community has an excellent working relationship with Longford County Council and the HSE and they are doing their utmost to help as many as they can through kind donations such as the recent donation drop-off point.

All funds raised from the drop-off donations will return to Longford to help battle homelessness in the area. Midlands Simon Community wish to thank all who donated.
