An article published in the New York Times has placed focus on beleagured housing estates in County Longford.

In a report entitled ‘Irish Try to Eradicate Ghosts of a Housing Crash’ in Saturday’s edition, journalist Suzanne Daley noted issues with unfinished or ‘ghost’ estates in Co Longford, and the severe drop in property values.

The Gleann Riada estate on the outskirts of Longford town received attention after several problems came to light, including a build-up of methane gas which led to two explosions.

The reporter spoke to residents of the affected developments, and to Co Council engineer Paul Ross, who claimed the authority would need 10 times the current level of funding to “sort out half of it [the problems].”
