Longford Gardaí were involved in a nationwide anti-burglary operation, Operation Fiacla, that resulted in the arrest of five men last night (Thursday, March 27).

Shortly after 9.30pm, Gardaí from National Support Services patrolling as part of Operation Fiacla became aware of two burglaries which had occurred in Drumshambo, Co Leitrim.

A navy coloured VW Golf was observed in the vicinity of the burglaries.

Following these reports the Garda vehicles took up positions on the N4 close to Longford and monitored all the eastbound traffic.

Eastern Region RSU units were also monitoring the M4 motorway and at approximately 11.20pm they observed a navy coloured VW Golf travelling eastbound between Mullinger and Enfield.

The vehicle was stopped on the M4 at Johnstown.

During a search of the car Gardaí discovered cash as well as other items.

The five males, three in their teens, one 20s and one 30 male were arrested at the scene and taken to Carrick on Shannon, Ballymote and Sligo Garda Stations where they are detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
