The race for this month’s Longford-Westmeath by-election could see two Longford-based candidates enter the running.

Chartered accountant and businessman James Morgan last night (Tuesday) confirmed his intention to stand as an Independent candidate after he was approached by a number of people over the weekend.

Longford Town Mayor Cllr Paul Connell was considering his options after being approached by a group of businessmen last week with a view to running in the by-election.

But it is the addition of first-time candidate and father of four, Mr Morgan which is likely to generate much interest locally before nominations close this Saturday.

Mr Morgan, who has played a key role in the development of Longford town’s Axis Centre, said the reason for his decision was due to fears Longford could be left out of the by-election race altogether.

“A lot of people have approached me because they feel Longford is being ignored,” he said.
