A Longford nurse who couldn’t run for two minutes has lost three stone and she is poised to run the London Marathon this Sunday, April 13.

Michelle Connell, originally from Esker, Killoe, is the only daughter of Michael and Margaret Connell.

Michelle left Esker fifteen years ago to work in St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin and is now living in Blackrock. Michelle lost three stone with Slimming World and is set to raise funds for Marie Keating Foundation when she runs the 26.2 miles Virgin Money sponsored London Marathon.

Michelle, 35, who has worked as a haematology nurse for the past eight years, tried numerous diets that left her feeling unwell before deciding to join her local Slimming World group at Naomh Olaf GAA Club in Sandyford.

She was inspired to join by her mum who joined in 2012 and successfully lost weight.

“Before Slimming World I never had much confidence,” Michelle explained. “I loved fashion and dressing up but hated shopping, and would often cry when I found myself having to go up another dress size.”

“Although initially being a little nervous my consultant Janet Leonard made me feel at ease straight away. I know my weight loss would not be the same without that weekly help and support I get from everybody.”

Michelle started doing a beginners running programme called ‘couch to 5km’. Despite struggling Michelle persisted, running three times a week.

Four months later she completed her first 5km run and her new-found love for running blossomed. Michelle even completed the Dublin City Marathon last October.

As a haematology nurse, running to raise money for the Marie Keating Foundation is important to her.

“Every day I see first-hand how important patient education, awareness and support is,” she said. “Marie Keating Foundation helps to fight a cause close to my heart and raising money through Slimming World is a great way to give something back. I love that the aim of Marie Keating Foundation is to ‘enlighten not frighten’.

Running the London Marathon has been a long term dream of Michelle’s.

“ I’ve only visited London three times so I’m looking forward to seeing it from a different angle,” she concluded.
