‘It’s time to show what you know; you are ready for this’

Today, Wednesday, June 4 sees the beginning of both the Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations.

The culmination of months and years of work, exam time can be stressful for both students and parents. So as students prepare to sit their exams, Deputy Principal of Lanesboro Community College, Michael Lyons offers them some words of advice.

Be prepared - Design a study plan for the exams which sticks closely to the school timetable, which is what you are used to. Your study area should be as similar as possible to exam conditions, so sit at a desk and no music or phones! Know when your exams are on and what you have to bring to them.

Be rested - You have to be mentally sharp for these exams so keep to your regular sleep patterns and eat properly. Don’t underestimate how physically challenging these exams are! Take care of your body and keep to sensible routine with regular short breaks, nutritious meals and lots of rest.

Be confident - You have spent two years preparing for these exams. You have spent an average of 180 hours in class for each subject plus the same again in homework and study. Your teachers have taught you well, you have covered your course, you have done your homework and you have studied hard. So now it’s time to show what you know; you are ready for this!

Be positive - Go into each exam with the attitude that ‘I am here to show off what I know to an examiner who wants to give me marks’. You have prepared for this exam; you know the subject, you know what they are looking for - believe in your own ability to perform on the day.

Be calm - Yes, you will be nervous going in. That’s just the adrenaline doing its job, it’s natural. Reading the paper will focus your mind and during those 5 minutes the body will calm itself down and your brain will be able to get on with the job!

Be reassured -

The exams will come and the exams will go. You have the whole summer in front of you to enjoy, not to mention the rest of your life.
