Hotel plan for Longford Town Centre

Moves are afoot which could see the the vacant Longford Town Centre building transformed into a hotel.

“I know there’s one developer looking at it, and he needs an operator to come on board,” Longford Chamber of Commerce President Seamus Butler told the Longford Leader, adding that such a development would provide a boost for the local economy.

“New hotels were the tipping point for places like Carrick-on-Shannon and Tullamore,” he said. “Once they arrived, everyone else upped their game, too.”

Mr Butler explained that Longford desperately needs another hotel: “Longford could do with more than one hotel. We saw this when the Rás came to Longford last May. Around 700 people travelled with the event and most could not be accommodated locally.

“It would also be great to see more weddings hosted in Longford as there is a great spin-off from them for other businesses around the town.”

However, Mr Butler admitted there are factors working against such a development going ahead.

“The problem is that there are hotels around the country in receivership or owned by NAMA which can be bought for less than the cost of building or converting another structure. But it’s all about location, and in that sense Longford is ideal as it can be easily reached from any point in the country.”
