Longford Primary school pupils made their way excitedly to Longford Slashers Sports Complex on Thursday, June 12 last for the fourth annuaL Garda Sports Day.

A community event, established by the Community Policing Unit in 2010 to encourage participation and friendships among those living locally, it has gone from strength to strength.

The senior classes in all primary schools in the Longford District were invited to take part in the Sports Day and there was some serious competition!

“The children took part in a wide range of activities on the day,” Sergeant Ursula Hussey, Community Policing Officer explained.

“From obstacle courses to water events there was something for everyone to enjoy and a perpetual trophy was awarded to the school with the best participation, teamwork and encouragement on the day,” said Garda Hussey, adding, “It was a great day, and it is important for the Gardaí to develop positive links with the schools; we are looking forward to continuing with this event in the years ahead.”

Over 700 children from across the county took place in this year’s Garda Sports Day. There was also great feedback from those who attended and there was an abundance of sportsmanship and volunteering.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank all the volunteers who helped on the day, particularly the Longford Youth Service,” said Garda Hussey.

“Thanks also to those who provided sponsorship including Longford Sports Partnership; Benny O’Brien, Bank of Ireland; Ganley’s Hardware; Paul Connell, Tesco Longford; McCarrick’s Cash & Carry and Longford EDI centre whose REVAMP staff made the wooden ski’s. The community Policing Group is also extremely grateful to Longford Slashers GAA Club, particularly Martin Jennings who is always so helpful.”

This year’s winning school was St Michael’s, Longford town.
