Students of Sacred Heart Primary School, Granard.

Sacred Heart primary school in Granard is the first school in County Longford to be awarded the title of Digital School of Distinction.

The Digital Schools of Distinction Award is a programme to promote and acknowledge best practice use of Internet and Communications Technology (ICT) at primary level.

Sacred Heart earned the status for the school by their excellent approach to the integration of ICT into learning and teaching.

Spearheaded by sixth class teacher, Mr Francis Gray, he said that “It is well advertised that it is an award that schools would want to get. As we were already using a lot of the technology, it was to look for acknowledgement for the good work we do with digital media.”

Every class has a computer, printer facilities, high speed broadband, interactive whiteboards and an iPad. They also have access to a wide range of assistive technologies, software and programmes in order to maximize teaching and learning.

“Children are the digital natives” explained Mr Gray, “they are the ones teaching us sometimes. It is amazing the imagination that they will bring.”

“All the children in the school are at an advantage of having prior experience before secondary school where the technology is widely used” Francis concluded.

There will be an official presentation in the school in the coming weeks where they will receive a laptop with educational software and apps, a wall plaque and certificate.
