Gardai have confirmed the commencement of a "sensitive" investigation, but declined to comment any further.

Gardai are investigating allegations of suspected child sex abuse in Longford dating back several years, the Leader understands.

The claims are believed to centre on alleged incidents that took place within the vicinity of Longford’s GAA headquarters Pearse Park.

No official statement was forthcoming from Longford Gardai this week, although a press office spokesman confirmed an investigation had been launched.

“Gardai in Longford have launched an investigation. Due to the sensitive nature of that investigtation, it would be inappropriate for us to comment any further,” said the spokesman.

Meanwhile, a senior member from Longford GAA’s Co Board said officials were aware of the Garda investigation, but at this stage would not be commenting on the matter.
