Gardai in Granard spearheaded a successful sting operation at the weekend in an investigation into ongoing thefts of oil burners.
The theft of oil burners has become a major problem in the locality of late and local Gardai had been investigating a number of such incidents. As part of the ongoing investigations, gardaí in Granard decided that a plan of action was required in an effort to address the problem.
A garda spokesperson explained what happened next.
“Basically we had known for some time that there were people stealing these burners and then placing them on DoneDeal.ie for sale,” the spokesperson stated.
“Last Friday night, two men stole an oil burner from a house in Edgeworthstown. Our undercover gardaí rang the men, explained what they were looking for and then arranged to meet them in Edgeworthstown.”
At the appointed time and location, Gardai swooped in on the men who turned up to sell the items.
“Within minutes of meeting, the two men were arrested by the gardaí and questioned in relation to the matter,” the spokesperson added.
A file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and gardaí expect charges to follow.
