The Fine Gael selection convention for the Longford/Westmeath by election will take place in the Mullingar Park Hotel on Monday, May 5 next at 8pm.

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny will be in attendance and it is expected that Gabrielle McFadden, Alan Shaw and Peter Burke will battle it out for selection on the night.

Meanwhile, a number of other candidates have thrown their hat into the political ring including Fianna Fail’s Angeus O’Rourke, who was selected uncontested during last week’s party convention after the two other candidates pulled out of the race.

Sinn Fein’s Paul Hogan and Independents’ Donal Jackson, and Brian Fagan have also signalled their intention to run in the by election as has John McNamara of the People’s Voice. In the last few hours it has also emerged that Labour is “seriously considering” putting Kilbeggan native and Trinity College student Conal Ennis forward on election day.

The by election will take place on May 23 - the same day as the Local and European elections - and is a result of the seat left vacant by Deputy Nicky Mcfadden following her death last month.
