Garda investigations into a "suspicious approach" made to a child in Caherconlish continue

Gardaí are seeking the public’s assistance after a priest was robbed and in a separate incident , criminal damage caused to St Mel’s College Chapel this week.

Last Friday, August 1, just before 6pm a male approached the door of the chapel and kicked it in. Gardaí in Longford town say the alarm subsequently went off and the assailant disappeared on foot. While nothing was stolen in the incident, the door of the chapel was badly damaged.

Two days prior to that, a local priest was preparing for a ceremony when a knock came to the door of the chapel.

When the priest answered he was accosted by a female who subsequently stole an envelope from him which contained a large sum of money. The female then ran off and the priest was left badly shaken following the incident.

Gardai in Longford town are dealing with the incident and they are appealing to the public to come forward and help them with their enquires if they noticed anything suspicious on the date in question.

Ballymahon break-ins

Gardaí are also warning business people and members of the public to tighten up on security after a number of burglaries in the Ballymahon area over the past week.

On July 28 last between 2-6pm a number of apartments at the Mill Complex in the heart of Ballymahon town were vandalised.

Gardaí say that doors were kicked in and while there was nothing stolen from some of the apartments, all were ransacked and criminal damage was caused.

Gardaí are currently investigating the incident and CCTV footage is being reviewed.

Three nights later between the hours of 1am and 3am, Big Bites fast food takeaway in Ballymahon town was robbed.

Thieves entered the premises through a side window and stole a substantial sum of money from both the fruit machine and the till. A hard drive was also taken and gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious to contact them.

Damage to cars

Six cars were also damaged on August 2 at approximately 6pm in a well known garage on the Battery Road. Gardaí are investigating.
