A Longford pig farmer who was jailed for ordering two repossession men to strip naked and get into a pen with an agitated boar has been released on bail ahead of his appeal.
Donal Connaughton of Elfeet, Newtowncashel, Co Longford, was given a 12-month sentence by Judge Anthony Hunt at Longford Circuit Court sitting in Tullamore on Monday, November 11 last.
The Court of Criminal Appeal said last Thursday (December 12) it was influenced by the fact that his sentence is likely to expire before his appeal is heard.
The court heard the 55-year-old will allege jury bias as he claims he was approached by a man during his trial who told him that he had a man on the jury.
The prosecution says the matter has been investigated and Gardaí are satisfied nothing untoward occurred.
The case has been before the courts for a year. At the end of his trial, Connaughton was found guilty of two counts of false imprisonment, two charges of threatening to cause serious harm, one count of assault and two of criminal damage. Sentencing was adjourned five times prior to November 11 last.
