Chloe Matthews, a sixth class pupil in Aughnagarron NS, Granard, has been crowned the Longford champion in the annual Eason Spelling Bee county heats.

Chloe, daughter of Frances and Oliver Matthews, was chosen to represent the school in the county heat after the Aughnagarron girl won a spelling bee which was held in the school for fifth and sixth class students.

On Tuesday, February 11, fifteen spellers from primary schools around the county made their way to Scoil Eimear, Longford, to compete in the Eason Spelling Bee County Heat.

Each of the pupils took it in turn to spell out different words, starting with a warm up round, an easy round and a medium round before continuing with difficult words.

In the end, just four pupils were left in the competition and Chloe was up to spell first.

The only one out of the four to spell her word correctly, Chloe was crowned County Champion, much to her delight.

Chloe will now progress to the Provincial Spelling Bee competition, where the top spellers in the province will battle it out to earn a place in the final.

In June, the four winners from the Provincial rounds will compete in final, to be in with a chance to be crowned the 2014 Eason Spelling Bee Champion and win a book library worth €7,500 for their school along with books to the value of €500 for themselves.

Speaking to the Leader, Chloe’s teacher Breda Kennedy says that the school are very proud of Chloe and her achievement, adding, “We’re delighted to have someone representing us in the province.”

A great honour for the Granard school, the competition is also a great confidence boost for Chloe.

From now until June, the sixth class student will be practicing her spellings to represent Aughnagarron NS and County Longford in the Provincial round of the annual Eason Spelling Bee.
