Longford Westmeath Deputy James Bannon today confirmed that he will not be commenting on story in yesterday’s Sunday World alleging that he sent an offensive text message about a female RTE reporter to a former employee.

The alleged text message dates from 2007 and, according to Sunday World reporter Alan Sherry, the text was sent following a report on RTE’s Drivetime which referred to Deputy Bannon.

It is claimed that when his then parliamentary assistant Johanna Lowry left a voicemail about the report for Deputy Bannon, the local TD responded by text.

It is alleged that the text referred to the journalist behind the report and Ms Lowry told the Sunday World that she found the message ‘disturbing, totally inappropriate and disgusting.”

The Sunday World reports that the alleged text message will feature in an upcoming Employment Appeals Tribunal case. Ms Lowry is taking a case to the EAT in relation to her dismissal as Deputy Bannon’s parliamentary assistant in 2013.

Speaking to the Longford Leader, Deputy Bannon said: “I am involved in a case and there are sensitive matters. I just can’t comment on it.”
