Arva local news February 27

Dr Patrick Rudden: On Friday night last a presentation was made to Dr Paddy Rudden to mark his retirement from General Practice in Arva.

Since his arrival in Arva in January 1977 he has endeared himself to the community and this was evident from the huge attendance on the night. People came from all the surrounding parishes to say thanks to someone who was more than a Doctor – he was a friend and confidant to many. His caring manner and genuine interest in his patients left people feeling better just having talked to him.

Dr Paddy had a brilliant University career taking Honours in his medical examinations in U.C.D. He served as House Physician in the Surgical Hospital, Cavan and as Registrar in the Mater Hospital, Dublin before coming to Arva. After his family Paddy's two great loves were Gaelic Games and Irish Music and he devoted much of his spare time to both. He won an Intermediate Championship Medal with Lacken Celtic and gave over 5 years as Medical Officer to the Cavan Senior and U-21 County Teams during what has been their most successful period over the past 40 years. The U-21 team reached the All Ireland Final in 1996 only to be defeated by Kerry in Thurles while the following year the Senior team won the Ulster Final for the first and only time since 1969. Those were great days to be involved and will linger in the memory forever.

Paddy was instrumental in starting the underage Coaching for pupils in St Mary's National School, Arva on Saturday mornings long before it was started by the G.A.A. and this Coaching is still going on. He was responsible for the revival in Irish Music in the area and also played with the Cornafean group on some of their C.D's. On behalf of the community Paddy was presented with an Inscribed Mirror which also had the G.A.A. Crest, Medical Crest & a Fiddle featured on the Mirror. As Paddy & Susan have travel plans for their retirement a Travel Voucher was also presented while their long time Secretary Breege Mc Keon Bohan presented Susan with a Bouquet of Flowers.

In response Dr Paddy thanked the organising committee, the community, staff and everyone who helped him along the way. Phil Smith, Chairman Cavan County Board presented Dr Paddy with a piece of Cavan Abbey Crystal to say thanks for his service to Gaelic Games. The organising committee was Padraig Mahon & Tom Moore representing Lacken Celtic football club, Owen Cusack neighbour and life long friend, Breege Mc Keon Bohan, Danny Mc Entee, Secretary St Patrick's Arva G.F.C. John Gormley, Eamonn Gray & Barney Cully. There was plenty of Traditional Irish Music while Kevin Logue provided great music for dancing. On behalf of the local and surrounding community we wish Paddy & Susan many years of good health to enjoy their retirement.

Tidiest town

Arva were the winners of the "Tidiest Small Town" in the recent Cavan Litter League and were presented with their Certificate at a meeting of Cavan County Council recently and is on display in the window of the Post Office.

The Tidy Town Committee respectfully appeal to all householders to sweep outside their premises daily and help keep the town clean & tidy. They hope to be in a position to dramatically improve their marks in this years Tidy Town's competition. Now that we have reached the top of the table why not try to stay there. It makes a big impression on visitors and tourist's if the streets are clean and tidy and would be seen as a reflection on the residents. It can only be of help to business and job's in the area and we will need every help in the coming years. There have been a number of complaints recently of dogs fouling the footpaths in the town and dog owners are asked to please control their pet's.

Mrs Verlaine

Harrison

There was deep and widespread regret as news spread of the death of Mrs Verlaine Harrison (nee Knight), Corlisbratten, Arva which occurred at her residence on Saturday 7th February following a long illness. A native of Terenure, Dublin she came to Arva following her marriage to Denzil on 1st August 1966 and immediately immersed herself in the life of the area. She was a top class badminton player and was deeply involved in the Arva club and the Breffni League. She was involved with the Arva Area Development Association for many years and worked hard for the Association. Verlaine took a very active interest in Swimming and Life Saving and the Irish Water Safety Association made a presentation to her last year to mark her long association with them in Cavan where she was County Secretary for many years. She was a Swimming Tutor and Examiner – the only one in County Cavan, she was a Swimming Teacher & Instructor, a Life Guard and Life Guard Instructor, she was an A.E.D. (Defibrillator) Instructor & Examiner, and Aqua Fit Instructor to name just some of the qualifications she held. She has given Swimming lessons in Riversdale, Ballinamore for over 20 years to school children and adults of all levels. She also gave lessons in the Breffni Arms Hotel & Leisure Centre for many years. Verlaine has been involved in the annual 2 week course in Swimming & Water Safety at Gartylough, Arva for over 25 years where many, many children learned to Swim and progress to Life Saving. It didn't matter what the weather was like – warm & sunny or wet & cold – Verlaine and her helpers were always in attendance. The Irish Water Safety Association was represented at her funeral by the Chairman Mr Frank Nolan & the C.A.O. Mr John Leech. Verlaine was predeceased by her husband Denzil and is survived by her son Ronald, daughters Leslie Brady, Corlisbratten & Nicola Phillips, Turks & Caicos Islands, Caribbean, sisters Olwyn & Gaye, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and many friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy. Her remains were removed from her residence to the Church of Ireland Parish Church, Arva where Rev Mark Lidwell officiated at her Funeral Service and burial in the adjoining Churchyard. There were many callers to her home over 2 days and a very large and representative attendance at her funeral which showed the esteem in which she was held.

George William

Halliday

The death occurred in Coventry, England on 7th January of Mr George William Halliday late of Drumhillagh, Arva a member of a very popular local family. He emigrated to England in 1956 but never lost touch with his home place. He never lost his love for farming and always had cattle in England – in fact he was coming from tending to them when he took ill. He worked with the Ford Motor Company but was retired for some time. He was predeceased by his brother John James, sister Helen and is survived by his brothers Alfie in Drumhillagh & Morrisson in England, sisters Evelyn, Vera, Florrie & May all in England, nieces, nephews and many friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy. His ashes were taken to Lough Gowna Parish Church on Friday week last for Funeral Service with burial in the adjoining Churchyard. Rev Mark Lidwell officiated.

Congratulations

Congratulations are extended to Mrs Helen O' Hara who recently qualified as a Swimming Tutor with the Irish Water Safety Association. She can now train potential Swim Teachers and potential Examiners.
