Last Friday saw Stephen Collins from The Irish Times visit Lyons’s pub in Ardagh to launch Luke Baxter’s “Our Roots in Stone”.

The book documents gravestones and memorials in the village’s lower churchyard and in St Patrick’s Church of Ireland churchyard, and records inscriptions on memorial stones in cemeteries in Mercedes, Buenos Aires and Flatbush, Brooklyn, where many emigrants from Longford are buried.

Tom Bannon from the Tidy Towns Committee chaired the event and speakers included County Mayor, Cllr Larry Bannon, Rev Canon AW Kingston from the Church of Ireland and Mary Carleton Reynolds, Longford County Librarian. Longford Town Mayor, Cllr Paul Connell also attended

Our Roots in Stone, published by Luke Baxter in association with Ardagh Tidy Towns Committee, is available at Baxter’s pharmacy in Longford and at Lyons’s shop in Ardagh for just €10.
