The annual Longford Comhairle na nÓg workshops and elections took place on Thursday October 25 in the Backstage theatre, Longford. In association with Longford County Council, over 100 young people from every post primary secondary school, young service and youth clubs throughout the county attended the day.

Longford Comhairle na nÓg have been tackling the issue of healthy eating amongst their peers and designed the AGM to reflect awareness among the young people that attended. The day was officially opened by Mayor of Longford Town, Cllr Peggy Nolan. She commended the work of all the young people involved in the Comhairle na nÓg initiative and remarked that the future is a secure place to look forward to, with young people like these coming up the ranks. The young people were then divided up into four workshops entitled, Healthy Eating & Body image, Nutritional Workshop, Poster making workshop and Healthy Body Healthy Mind.

The AGM was also a day to raise awareness on the topic of healthy nutrition for teenagers. Granard secondary school Cnoc Mhuire have now taken on board the advice of Longford Comhairle na nÓg and are currently piloting a healthy eating policy within the school.

Luke Casserly, Chairperson of Longford Comhairle na nÓg, thanked Cnoc Mhuire for starting this initiative and hoped other schools in the county would follow suit. “Nutrition is a vital ingredient in positive mental health and physical health with teenagers,” he said.

The new Comhairle committee of 21 young people was elected on the day and will meet on a monthly basis to work on issues affecting young people within the county and can also be used as a consultative forum to get young people opinions.

Nutritionist Anne Maher was present at the AGM and gave the young people an hour seminar on the importance of looking after their nutrition early, as what they eat now will affect them into the future and even affect their children in years to come.

The young people present were very vocal during the seminar and were amazed at the importance of nutrition and how a positive healthy approach would improve every aspect of their lives from sleeping patterns to concentration levels in school.

Mayor of County Longford, Cllr Sean Farrell officially closed the day and thanked everyone for attending and to keep up the good work.
