A specially arranged meeting between local politicians and Health Service Executive (HSE) management threatened to spill over last week, writes Liam Cosgrove.

Two representatives from the State’s main public health provider attended a questions and answers session inside the chamber of Longford County Council last Wednesday.

Originally scheduled for 5pm and with no fewer than eight items on its agenda, the meeting itself didn’t actually get underway until 5:15pm.

That delay and HSE area manager Joe Ruane’s announcement that he had to leave by 6:15pm to attend a removal only served to dampen an already fraught atmosphere further.

“You mean to say we (councillors) have one hour?” Cllr Mae Sexton angrily asked.

As it turned out, Mr Ruane said he would forego his attendence at the removal with the meeting coming to close shortly after 8pm.
