‘A Mid-Summer Night Dance for Geraldine’ has been planned for the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar on Saturday, June 21 at 9pm.

Twenty-seven -year-old Castlebar native Geraldine Lavelle suffered serious injuries in a cycling accident on Longford’s by-pass last October.

Geraldine, who lived in Abbeycartron and worked in Abbott Diagnostics Division, suffered a cervical spinal fracture that has left her paralysed from the chest down.

A graduate of the National University of Ireland Galway, Geraldine is now in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire undergoing intensive rehabilitation where, despite her prognosis, she is keen to return to the life she had prior to her accident. Active in sports, Geraldine has kept that enthusiasm, emerging victorious in a range of wheelchair sports.

Geraldine’s recovery will require a massive effort in terms of the intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy as well as enormous physical, moral and financial support.

As such, her friends and family, in conjunction with support from political, media, sporting and business groups have launched a campaign to raise money for Geraldine’s recovery. The social night on June 21 marks the first major fundraising event.
